Ortiz Cattle & Co.
Covered Working & Feed Cattle Barn
Grant Award: $10,000
Amy and her husband Ignacio raise Holstein steers for beef, selling them to stockyards and individual buyers once they reach 600 pounds. To increase the safety and welfare of the animals and themselves, as well as reduce the development of erosion due to muddy conditions in feed areas, Ignacio built a covered working and feeding barn with attached corrals, and a head gate is being installed. He has also built a hay shed.
This equipment will enable them to work the cattle on a solid, dry surface, reducing the chances of injury. The barn structure itself will reduce costs by improving feed utilization and reducing spoilage caused by rain.
