As one of only two licensed dairies remaining in Buncombe County, Bart’s ability to produce consistent, high-quality forage directly affects the long-term sustainability of his business and contribution to the local food supply. To improve his ability to harvest the volume of hay he needs for his dairy cows, and at the right time, Bart has used his grant to purchase a new nine-foot Krone disc mower. The new mower will significantly improve both the speed and dependability of the hay harvest. It will also enable him to harvest hay at the ideal maturity stage, preserving digestibility, protein, and energy levels essential for productive milk cows and well-developed heifers.
Bart estimates that improvements in forage productivity and harvest will increase milk production by 58,000 pounds per year.
