Moore Natural Farm

Expand to Commercial Hay Production and Improve Forage Quality
Grant Award: $10,000

In October 2025, Moore Natural Farm sold their beef cattle herd to improve time management and reduce operating costs. After years of producing hay for on-farm use, Philip plans to expand into commercial hay production to supply local horse and small animal owners. This project has three phases.

First, based on soil testing, Philip will add soil amendments to maximize forage production and quality. Second, he will convert a portion of the farm’s forage from tall fescue to orchardgrass. This species does not present the challenges associated with fescue toxicosis and, as a preferred forage for horses, will command a higher price. Finally, he will purchase a Farm-Maxx Jumbo Mini round baler that his 35-hp tractor can accommodate.
