Justin Brogan, 5 Loaves 2 Fish Farm

Walk in Refrigeration/Wash Station Unit
Grant Award: $8,000

As part of an overall expansion plan to significantly increase production, Justin will be adding a combination walk-in refrigeration/wash station unit to his operation. This addition is a critical component of the farm’s plan to scale up to meet demand and reach new markets.

Constructed on a 9′ x 16′ foundation, the 9′ x 8′ refrigeration structure will be insulated and house an air-conditioner and CoolBot® unit. This space will provide larger and improved cold storage (Justin is currently using ice chests), will help with time management, and will minimize waste. The other side of the foundation will house a covered produce wash station.

Streamlining the washing process with a dedicated area will increase the ability for the farm to focus on marketing, sales and delivery options. With plans to more than double production in 2024, 5 Loaves 2 Fish Farm grows an array of annual vegetables including kale, collard greens, swiss chard, lettuce, beets, onions, squash, zucchini, and cantaloupe.

While currently selling at the Morganton Farmers Market and through their online store, the expansion will allow them tap into the Hickory market, offer a CSA and continue their involvement with community support (local soup kitchens, food ministry, and donations to churches).
