Jason Rhodes, Rhodesdale Farm

Sheep Handling Facility Improvements
Grant Award: $8,000

To improve his sheep handling process, Jason has added fencing and converted an existing cattle feedlot area into a sheep feeding and handling facility. He also installed a platform livestock scale in a covered section of a new alleyway.

In Jason’s previous set up, he has to hand-catch sheep by crowding them with hog panels. This temporary system takes time and labor dollars to set up and tear down. The layout, design, and method used to catch and restrain animals elevates stress for both sheep and workers and increases the risk of injury during animal handling.

These facility improvements will save time and labor, enhance animal safety and welfare, improve decision-making related to marketing and animal nutrition, and create opportunities for enterprise expansion.
