Billy Bryant, Bryant Farms

Packing Shed
Grant Award: $8,000

Billy has completed his packing shed including the concrete pad, construction block, electrical, framing, and metal doors. At the advice of the Carolina Farm Stewards Association Local Food Safety Coordinator, Billy installed a separate pump house structure to house the pump which will supply water to the packing shed. The new facility and equipment will enable him to obtain GAP certification, which will allow him to sell his products to local schools and prisons.

This year Bryant Farms was approved for cost share funding through NRCS for a high tunnel, which has enabled Billy to diversify his crops and extend his growing season. It will also protect his spring strawberry crop from deer damage.

A 2011 AgOptions grant enabled Billy to expand vegetable production, reducing his dependence on tobacco, and helping him establish a relationship with Ingles. To maintain the wholesale relationship with 12 Ingles stores, this project will ensure that Bryant Farms has the necessary food safety certification to continue current market relations and provide opportunities to expand.
