John Queen III, John Queen Farms

Hydraulic Squeeze Chute and Digital Scales for Heifer Development
Grant Award: $6,000

John runs a stocker operation on his fourth-generation family farm, grazing about 500 head of cattle annually. He plans to purchase a hydraulic squeeze chute to help safely process cattle before turning them out to pasture and digital scales for monitoring weight gain and assisting in administering herd health products.

The chute will have the added benefit of reducing the amount of farm labor required to process the cattle, projected to save the farm an estimated $9,000 in labor costs in 2021 and $11,500 in 2022. Additionally, the new equipment will help John implement Western North Carolina’s first heifer development program to benefit the area’s cattle industry.
