Paige Witherington and Justin Dansby,
Pitch Pine Farm

Root Vegetable Harvesting Equipment
Grant Award: $6,000

From farm analyses of their root vegetable production, it was identified that over ¾ of Pitch Pine Farm’s time is spent harvesting.

The purchase of a specialized Spedo 2-row Potato Digger has significantly reduced harvest time and increase marketable yields. The digger is expected to pay for itself in less than a year.

Since starting the farm business in 2014, Pitch Pine Farm has developed a thriving market presence with numerous customers and over 50 CSA shares, harvesting over 200,000 lbs. of produce form their land.

They sell to restaurants and independent grocery stores throughout Transylvania and Henderson Counties. Past AgOptions grants have helped them become more profitable and sustainable and has provided them the resources required to become a success.

To ensure the long-term sustainability of their farm business, increased profitability and balance of labor are vital components. This project would ensure that they are moving to a sustainable model for the future. They sell 45 different kinds of vegetables and dozens of varieties of herbs, flowers and fruits. They are certified organic.
