Nancy Bateman, Bateman Girls’ Cattle Farm

Heifer Replacement Program
Grant Award: $3,000

With the ultimate goal of growing out 20% replacement/additional head of cattle per year on their farm, Nancy has implemented a program that includes purchasing an EDP “heifer bull,” rotational grazing using temporary solar fencing, setting up a corral for handling, locating feeding troughs and mineral feeders and enhancing the entrance to the farm for ease of transport.

Raising their own replacement heifers will ensure that they know the genetic history, temperament and health history of the herd. Once her program is in place, she anticipates increased income, decreased labor costs, higher efficiency and better overall health of her cattle and the farmland.

Nancy farms on land that has been her in family for over 80 years. The “Bateman Girls” consist of her mother, sister and two nieces, who all help out on the farm.
