Jackie has converted an existing outbuilding into a crop specific indoor growing space for organic microgreens. The interior was gutted and rebuilt to meet the specific conditions to grow microgreens and will meet organic standards.
She added shelving and a garden sprayer for watering, as well as purchasing potting mix, seeds and growing trays. Microgreens are a very profitable crop – 2-1/2 ounces retails for $5, and a pound for $36 wholesale.
With this upgrade, she will double her income in 2018 and expects to triple production by 2019. Jackie currently sells to restaurants, but demand exceeds her ability to fulfill all orders. With her expansion, she will be able to reach more markets and take on larger customers.
