2015 Grant Recipient Mikell’s Farm Honey has won the 7th Annual International Black Jar Honey Contest for best SOURWOOD honey. This is the second year they have won this prestigious honor after winning it in 2014. The contest is held by The Center for Honeybee Reserach in Asheville, NC.

Sourwood is the prized and well-known honey of the southern Appalachian mountains. It blooms in mid-summer at a time when very few other nectar sources are available. It is light with a very distinctive taste. Being local and so influential upon the sub-conscious palettes of the tasting judges, it is given it’s own category. This is also the most competitive category – due to the shear volume of entries.

Congratulations Sharry and Doug!
