Randy and Carolyn Edmundson, Edmundson Produce Farm

Growing Healthy Disease-Free Plants
Grant Award: $3,000

Randy and Carolyn are doubling their seedling production with the construction of a new greenhouse. They are building a 20-foot by 60-foot greenhouse and installing heat, fans, and an 8-foot by 8-foot germination chamber. This project allows them to produce a larger variety of vegetables for an extended season, while also ensuring they have quality, disease-free plants.

They have struggled in the past with buying plants from large commercial growers because the seedlings often had diseases. The greenhouse allows them to control the production of their own plants so they know they are healthy.

Since 2000, Edmundson Produce Farm has expanded from growing sweet corn, beans and squash to a full line of vegetables, including specialty greens and strawberries. They now farm 105 acres and have customers throughout the east coast from Florida to Ohio. They have a 150-member CSA and sell through the WNC Farmer’s Market and to local restaurants. They only use non-GMO seed and minimal spray. All of their household income is from farming.
