Linda Shell, Tater Hill Farm
Protection/Expansion/Diversification
Grant Award: $3,000
Linda and her brother Terry Moffitt have expanded their sugar snap pea crop, added 100 blueberry bushes and constructed protective fencing around three fields to safeguard their high value crops from wildlife damage.
They sell directly off the farm, at Bakersville and Johnson City’s Farmer’s Markets and to TRACTOR Food and Farms, which had more demand for Tater Hill’s produce than they can meet. TRACTOR is a coop between Mitchell and Yancey County that distributes local foods to local retailers and other outlets.
This project helps sustain a former tobacco farm that has been in the family’s hands since 1947. Terry is retiring in April 2014 and becoming a full-time farmer.
“Farming, in my opinion, is the best life a person could have,” Linda said.
