Karen Taylor, Taylors Greenhouse

Herbal Options
Grant Award: $3,000

Karen is broadening her customers’ knowledge of herbs by selling culinary and medicinal herbal plants as well as hosting hands-on workshops where participants work closely with the herbs.

Each month, Karen has a different theme for the classes. Students learn how to harvest, cook and preserve herbs as well as hear about herb history and folklore. They make salves and lotions as well as aromatherapy oils. Karen is also creating an informative website to serve as a resource for customers who are increasingly calling her for information about herbs.

This project is an expansion of the Taylors Greenhouse current offerings of vegetable seedlings and ornamental plants. The retail space is located at a convenient location on Highway 129. Karen also sells at shows at Stecoah Valley Gallery and Oaks Gallery. The nursery, which she has helped her family with since she was a child, has recently become her sole source of income.

In 2013 she grew sage, basil, dill, a variety of mints, thyme, rosemary, chamomile, horehound, stevia, citronella, echinacea, St. John’s Wort, garlic, ginger, bay, calendula, eucalyptus, penny royal, lemongrass, horseradish, blackberry (for leaves), roses (for hips and petals), and black, green and white teas.
