Heated Greenhouse Dedicated to Sustainably Grown Products
Grant Award: $6,000

Susan is adding a 30-foot by 96-foot heated greenhouse specifically for growing vegetable and herb transplants in organic potting soils with organic fertilizer and pest control methods. The separate greenhouse prevents cross-contamination with conventionally raised nursery crops.

Purchases include a dedicated fertilizer injector and propagation tables, and the installation of plumbing and electrical systems. Susan is also expanding her herb offerings with this project.

This greenhouse, to be the third at the Roberts Cove Road farm property, is being built where one of the farm’s six cold frames were crushed in a 2009 snowstorm. The plants are sold at the retail location in Weaverville on 70 Monticello Road.

Reems Creek Nursery started as a Mom-and-Pop business in Susan’s parents’ front yard in Weaverville in 1980. It now employs 25 people, with expectations of increasing employment as profit margins increase.
