Grant Award: $3,000 — Value Added Cattle
Shannon is increasing the value of his cattle by preconditioning the animals prior to sale. All of the calves are weaned, vaccinated and fed a minimum 5 pounds of grain per head per day for 60 days along with grass. This regiment boosts selling weight, and he is able to sell in truckload lots with other local producers, gaining another .15 cents per pound over weekly markets.
To improve his system, he is building a new corral to safely and humanely handle the animals. Shannon markets through Madison Farms and the Southeast Livestock Exchange.
