Grant Award: $3,000 — Pastured Raised Poultry Processing Equipment
The addition of an on-farm processing facility for pastured raised poultry allows Balsam Gardens to increase their production from 150 chickens to 600 a year as well as add 75 turkeys. The processing facility increases the farm income to more than 50 percent of the household income.
The local community currently does not have multiple sources for locally raised chickens. Steven currently sells at the Jackson County Farmers Market and the Historic Haywood Farmers Market with great success.
