Dennis Niemeyer, Magnolia Ridge Farm
Galax & Native Wildflower Production
Grant Award: $3,000
Dennis is growing native wildflowers from seed using a propagation greenhouse to both germinate the seeds as well as grow-off seedlings. He is equipping the prop house with bottom (floor) heat for seedling production as well as a mist/irrigation system that is capable of accommodating multiple crops and species needs. He is also increasing the ventilation in the greenhouse to accommodate a late winter/early spring seed crop.
Dennis cultivates Green Dragon, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Toothwart, Fairy Wand, Shooting Star, Galax, Rattlesnake Orchid, Crested Iris, Turk’s Cap Lilly, Indian Cucumber Root, Partridge Berry, Blood Root, Red Trillium and White Trillium. He is also developing a protocol to grow Galax urceolata commercially. He sells to garden clubs, public gardens and arboretums for public plant sales, as well as wholesale to garden centers and specialty mail order nurseries.
