Bill Beuttell Sr. & Will Beuttell Jr.
Diversification of Family Farm with Hops Production
Grant Award: $6,000
The Beuttells are establishing one acre of hops in a system designed specifically for steep terrains. Their method for growing and harvesting hops maximizes yield without relying on cherry pickers or other equipment typically required to reach 18-foot-high trellises.
The Beuttells have been working with the Avery County Cooperative Extension Service, several hops organizations and Appalachian State University in the last year to test hops varieties and establish an impressive business plan. Full operational expenses are estimated at $35,000 for 2010. They anticipate selling to local microbreweries.
