Organic Greenhouse Tomatoes – Grant Award: $3,000
“Having assistance with the initial start-up costs enabled us to get the business off the ground much more quickly and allowed us to experiment with different aspects of organic vegetable production. We plan for this to be a long-term venture!” ~ Callie & Philip Moore, Moore Natural Farm

Philip is a third-generation tobacco farmer in his family and he has raised a variety of livestock and fruits & vegetables since childhood. With his award, Philip purchased and installed a high tunnel greenhouse designed to save water and energy.

The greenhouse allows Philip to extend the growing season of his tomatoes sold at a roadside stand by four months. He also markets tomatoes to local food processors producing ketchup, salsa, pasta sauce and other products. Philip hopes his greenhouse will serve as a community model for sustainable agriculture.
