Grant Award: $3,500 – Container Garden

Crop Diversification

Kevin Welch of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians has used the WNC Ag Options Grant to help establish a container gardening business.

Kevin currently works with the Cherokee Preservation Foundation to revive traditional Cherokee garden crops and make Cherokee heritage seed varieties available – such as Cherokee October beans, candy roaster, flour corn, and Cherokee butter beans.

Kevin Welch is building container gardens for folks who no longer have access or space of their own. Kevin will build each container to fit the special needs of the customer – particularly the elderly or those with disabilities.
