$2,500 — Heirloom Tomatoes

Pete Dixon has been a full time farmer for 12 years. He and his family have a diverse mix of vegetables and berries that they sell at tailgate markets. Mr. Dixon is a progressive problem solver who has researched many alternatives to tobacco income. He regularly teaches and shares information about his farming experiences with others. The Dixon’s also rely on vacation cabin rental income. The WNC Ag Options program is supporting the Dixon’s idea to expand greenhouse production of heirloom tomatoes.
Expected income from mushroom production and sales in the next 2 years totals $15,000.
With the help of his NC Cooperative Extension agents, Jeanine Davis, Ross Young, David Kendall and Elizabeth Tolley and others, Mr. Dixon believes he can provide high quality heirloom tomatoes to met a growing market demand.
