$2,500 — Herbs and Ramps
Because of this grant “I will move 10 acres of wooded, heavily shaded, steeply sloped land, which normally would not be used for agriculture, into production and makes the farm more diversified.” ~ Beverly Whitehead
Beverly and her husband have been farming since they were kids. In 2001 they helped to start the Smoky Mountain Native Plant Association and became cooperators in the Specialty Crops Program. This grant allowed them to expand the specialty crop production of ramps from 1 acre to 10 acres by fencing out cattle, acquiring a tiller and plant materials/seeds.
Harvesting of domestic production will not begin until 2006.
Beverly Whitehead is working closely with her NC Cooperative Extension Agent.
